Everyone is welcome! Join us in a global movement to flood the world with uncommercial messages! In these uncertain times, we have an opportunity to use our creative talents to make a difference. Introducing "Uncommercials" – a series of anti-advertisements designed to promote the better future we envision. These short, ad-like parodies are not commercials and do not generate profit. Instead, they are designed to provoke thought and encourage discussion by asking more questions than they answer, teaching us that not everything we do needs to be "commercial." ===== What Are Uncommercials? ===== Uncommercials are anti-advertisements that remind us of the power of the uncommercial things in life - friends, family, community and more. The goal is to produce content that challenges consumer culture and highlights the absurdity and negative impacts of overconsumption or that promote ideas that challenge the status quo. ===== Our Mission ===== * **Promote a Better Future Around the World**: Create content that inspires and ask questions. * **Ask Questions**: Encourage viewers to think critically about consumerism and other uncommercial ideas. * **Non-Commercial**: Ensure that no one profits from these creations; they are purely for entertainment, social commentary, and inspirational purposes. ===== How It Works ===== We'll make short form (15 second, 30 second, or 60 second) uncommercials and will work to share resources in order to produce these sustainably. These projects will be created under a Creative Commons license, ensuring they remain free and accessible to all. ===== Get Involved ===== This is still in the idea stage, and I am seeking your input and help. Do you want to collaborate and create these uncommercials? There's no monetary gain, but together, we can flood the world with uncommercial messages. Filmmaking contracts should always be customised to suit each production and the legislation of your country / area. Consult an entertainment attorney for advice on any specific situation. Production Documents! ===== Why Uncommercials? ===== * **The Best Things in Life Are Uncommercial**: Uncommercials ask questions and leave you seeking answers or asking more questions. * **Inspired by Affluenza**: The concept is inspired by the "uncommercials" in the book *Affluenza: The All-Consuming Epidemic* by John de Graaf, David Wann, and Thomas H. Naylor. These satirical advertisements critique consumer culture and highlight the absurdity of overconsumption. Inspiration - I'm still working on this page ===== Guidelines ===== More to come on this as we figure it out... * **Length**: Uncommercials should be short, ranging from 15 seconds to one minute. * **Distribution**: They are intended for online distribution under a Creative Commons license. * **Narrative Guidelines**: In partnership with our nonprofit organization United Humans: A Community __united__ by the desire to get to know one another. Let's be curious about each other and ask more questions instead of preaching answers. * **Empathy**: Each of us is a uniquely capable and flawed human being, doing the best we can with the knowledge and resources available to us. Each of us is deserving of dignity and the opportunity to participate in society as fully as we wish to. Empathy helps us understand what others are going through, which helps us build more meaningful connections, breaks down stereotypes, and helps us build a more inclusive and understanding society. * **Fairness**: If we agree that all humans are equal and if we want to live in harmony, it shouldn’t be controversial to help those who are less fortunate or to reward people based on how beneficial their contributions are to society and the world. * **Science**:The Scientific Method and the Peer Review Process are two tools we use to improve our understanding of the universe. They can also be applied to collective decision-making, enabling us to maximize benefit while minimizing harm. * **Inclusivity**: There are known knowns. There are known unknowns. And there are unknown unknowns. The unknown unknowns are the most dangerous, but there is insurance that you can take out against unknown unknowns - and that is to surround yourself with the most diverse points of view, people from all walks of life and people with all kinds of ideas, especially those different from your own. Surrounding yourself with diverse perspectives and people from all walks of life is the best way to build a resilient, inclusive community. * **Sustainability**: Our aim is to alleviate suffering now and ensure the continuity of all forms of life—human, animal, and plant—into the future. This can only be achieved by respecting and wisely using the resources we have. By adopting sustainable practices, we can safeguard our environment, make efficient use of resources, and secure a thriving future for all, rather than barreling towards extinction. * **AI Useage**: Please note that I, Kristen Gorlitz, did use AI to help me learn how to put together a wiki and to help me organize my thoughts. This wiki is mostly sourced content from the web, and AI helped me find and learn how to put it together quickly so that we can focus on what matters - creating uncommercial art. We have guidelines that fall in line with the copyright guidelines on AI useage. I do not use AI to write scripts. More to come. * * The U.S. Copyright Office’s AI policy guidance clarifies that AI-generated content alone cannot be copyrighted, as copyright law requires human creativity. For short film creators, this means that while you can use AI tools, your personal creative input must be evident for the film to be eligible for copyright protection. Additionally, using copyrighted materials to train AI models may require licensing and consideration of legal liabilities. This guidance helps navigate the intersection of AI technology and copyright law, ensuring that human creativity remains central to copyright eligibility. ===== Submissions ===== I'm still working on a way to accept submissions. If you have any ideas, email me at kristen@mindweird.com. Thanks! ===== Summary ===== Uncommercials are created with the intention of promoting social causes and raising awareness, rather than generating commercial gains. All participants volunteer their time and skills to produce these projects, driven by a shared commitment to making a positive impact. These works are released under a Creative Commons license, allowing anyone to use, share, and adapt them freely, provided proper attribution is given to the original creators. This collaborative and open approach ensures that the messages and resources can reach a wider audience and inspire collective action. Join us in this creative endeavor and help us make a positive impact on the world. Together, we can create content that truly matters.
